Possible Complications

Stiffness

Some patients develop stiffness after surgery. Physical therapy, early motion when appropriate, and individualized recovery planning help reduce this risk.

Infection

Infection is uncommon but serious. It may require antibiotics, additional surgery, or revision reconstruction depending on severity.

Instability

The shoulder replacement can rarely feel unstable or dislocate, especially after reverse shoulder replacement or revision surgery.

Fracture

Fractures can occur during surgery, after a fall, or around an implant later in life.

Nerve Injury

Temporary nerve irritation is uncommon but possible. Permanent nerve injury is rare.

When To Call After Surgery

Patients should contact the office if symptoms are worsening instead of improving, or if they notice signs that may suggest a complication.

Fever

Especially with increasing shoulder pain or wound drainage.

Drainage

Persistent or worsening drainage from the incision.

New Deformity

Sudden change in shoulder shape, position, or function.

Sudden Pain

Especially after a fall, injury, or lifting event.

When Revision Surgery Is Needed

Revision shoulder surgery may be considered when a shoulder replacement fails because of loosening, instability, infection, fracture, stiffness, implant wear, or persistent pain. Revision surgery is more complex than primary replacement and requires careful evaluation of implants, bone, soft tissue, infection risk, and patient goals.
