FROZEN SHOULDER

Frozen Shoulder
Injection

A corticosteroid injection can be an effective treatment for frozen shoulder, particularly during the painful early stages of the condition. While an injection does not immediately restore motion or eliminate the underlying capsular tightness, it often reduces pain enough to allow patients to stretch more comfortably and participate more effectively in rehabilitation.

How Does A Cortisone Injection Help?

Frozen shoulder causes inflammation within the joint capsule. A corticosteroid injection decreases that inflammation, often reducing pain and making stretching exercises easier to perform.

The injection does not "break up scar tissue" or immediately loosen the capsule. Instead, it creates a window during which rehabilitation is often more comfortable and more productive.

Dr. Streit's Clinical Perspective

I view a cortisone injection as a way to help patients participate more effectively in rehabilitation. The injection reduces pain, but the improvement in motion comes from the combination of time, stretching, and restoring flexibility to the shoulder capsule.

Who Benefits Most?

Early Frozen Shoulder

Patients with significant pain often experience the greatest benefit.

Night Pain

Reducing pain may improve sleep and overall quality of life.

Pain Limiting Therapy

When discomfort prevents effective stretching, an injection may help.

Loss Of Motion

Pain relief often allows patients to work more effectively on flexibility.

Difficulty With Daily Activities

Reducing inflammation may improve comfort during routine tasks.

Patients Avoiding Surgery

Many patients improve without surgery using injections combined with rehabilitation.

How Long Does The Injection Last?

The response varies from patient to patient. Some notice improvement within several days, while others experience gradual relief over the following weeks. The duration of benefit depends on the stage of frozen shoulder and the degree of inflammation.

Important Point

An injection is most effective when paired with a dedicated stretching program. Pain relief without rehabilitation usually results in less improvement in shoulder motion.

Will One Injection Cure Frozen Shoulder?

No. Frozen shoulder typically improves over time as the capsule gradually loosens. A cortisone injection can accelerate pain relief, but it does not eliminate the natural healing process or replace stretching and rehabilitation.

What I Tell My Patients

"The injection helps open the door. Your stretching program is what helps you walk through it."

When Is Surgery Considered?

Most patients recover without surgery. However, if significant pain and stiffness persist despite appropriate rehabilitation and other conservative treatments, arthroscopic capsular release may be recommended to restore shoulder motion.
