SHOULDER RECOVERY

Why Is My Shoulder
Recovery Taking So Long?

Recovery after a shoulder injury or surgery is rarely a straight line. Some patients improve quickly, while others recover more gradually. The important question is not how fast someone else recovered—it is whether your shoulder is progressing as expected.

Quick Answer

Most shoulder recoveries take longer than patients expect. Improvement often continues for six to twelve months. Recovery that completely plateaus, worsens, or falls significantly behind expectations deserves further evaluation.

What Is A Normal Recovery?

Every shoulder injury is different. Recovery depends on:

  • The original injury
  • Your age
  • Bone quality
  • Rotator cuff health
  • Whether surgery was performed
  • Your rehabilitation program
  • Your medical history

Because of these factors, two patients with seemingly similar fractures may recover at very different rates.

Dr. Streit's Philosophy

I don't compare my patients to averages. I compare today's shoulder to last month's shoulder. As long as you're continuing to improve, we're usually headed in the right direction.

Common Reasons Recovery Slows

Stiffness

Loss of motion commonly limits overall progress.

Persistent Weakness

Muscles often recover more slowly than patients expect.

Pain

Ongoing pain makes therapy more difficult.

Malunion

Fractures that heal in poor alignment may slow recovery.

Nonunion

A fracture that has not healed cannot progress normally.

Rotator Cuff Injury

An associated tendon injury may limit strength and motion.

What I Tell My Patients

"The shoulder has a remarkable ability to keep improving long after patients think recovery is over. The key is making sure you're still moving forward. If you've stopped improving completely, it's time to determine why."
