The best golf preparation therefore trains the shoulder as part of an entire kinetic chain—not as an isolated joint.

The Goal Is Not Maximum Flexibility
Golfers do not need the loosest possible shoulders. They need enough usable motion to perform the swing efficiently and enough muscular control to manage that motion. Mobility without stability can create problems just as stiffness can. The goal is strong, controlled, functional movement.
What Does The Shoulder Need To Do During Golf?
The shoulder changes position continuously throughout the golf swing.
It must coordinate with the shoulder blade and trunk during the backswing, rapidly change direction during transition, tolerate increasing speed during the downswing, and then help control the arm through impact and follow-through.
That requires several physical qualities working together.
Mobility
Enough shoulder motion to reach functional swing positions without excessive compensation.
Rotator Cuff Strength
Dynamic control of the humeral head as the arm changes position and speed.
Scapular Control
A stable, mobile shoulder blade that provides the foundation for arm movement.
Rotational Strength
The ability to generate and control rotational force throughout the kinetic chain.
Power
The ability to produce force quickly once adequate mobility and strength are present.
Endurance
The ability to maintain movement quality across dozens of swings and several hours of golf.
The Shoulder Does Not Work Alone
One of the most important concepts in golf training is that the shoulder is only one link in the kinetic chain.
Power begins from the golfer's interaction with the ground and is transferred through the legs, hips, pelvis, trunk, shoulder blades, shoulders, arms, and club.
A mobility or strength problem elsewhere may therefore change how much work the shoulder is required to perform.
Dr. Streit's Philosophy
I do not want a golfer spending months strengthening the shoulder while ignoring a stiff thoracic spine, weak lower body, or restricted hips. If the rest of the body cannot do its share of the work, the shoulder may continue compensating even after it becomes stronger. The best rehabilitation restores the shoulder and the athlete around it.
Shoulder Mobility For Golf
Shoulder mobility should be thought of as usable range rather than maximum range.
The amount of shoulder motion required varies with handedness, swing characteristics, age, anatomy, and whether the shoulder has undergone previous surgery.
A golfer needs enough movement to swing comfortably without forcing excessive compensation through the elbow, spine, or other parts of the body.
Elevation
Supports positioning of the arms throughout the swing and normal daily function.
External Rotation
Contributes to several shoulder positions, particularly in the trail shoulder.
Internal Rotation
Contributes to functional rotation and cross-body movement during the swing.
Cross-Body Motion
Important for the lead shoulder as the arm moves across the body.
Scapular Mobility
The shoulder blade must rotate and reposition as the arm moves.
Functional Combination
Golf requires multiple planes of movement occurring simultaneously rather than isolated joint measurements.
Lead Shoulder Mobility
The lead shoulder moves across the body and through substantial rotational demand during the swing.
For a right-handed golfer, the left shoulder is the lead shoulder. For a left-handed golfer, the right shoulder is the lead shoulder.
Loss of cross-body movement or rotation can shorten the backswing, alter follow-through, or force compensatory motion elsewhere.
Trail Shoulder Mobility
The trail shoulder moves through a different rotational pattern.
For a right-handed golfer, this is the right shoulder. For a left-handed golfer, it is the left.
Restrictions may become particularly noticeable near the top of the backswing or as the golfer transitions into the downswing.
Do Golfers Need To Stretch Their Shoulders?
Some golfers benefit from shoulder mobility work, particularly when a true restriction is present.
But stretching should have a purpose.
A golfer who already has adequate shoulder mobility may gain little from repeatedly trying to increase it. In that situation, stability, strength, or mobility elsewhere in the kinetic chain may be more important.
Stretch What Is Actually Stiff
A useful mobility program should be based on the golfer's actual limitations rather than assuming every golfer needs more shoulder flexibility. Sometimes the better target is the thoracic spine or hips rather than the shoulder itself.
Thoracic Rotation
The thoracic spine contributes substantially to the rotational movement required for golf.
When trunk rotation is limited, the missing motion must be obtained elsewhere.
The golfer may compensate through the lumbar spine, shoulder, elbow, or altered posture.
Backswing
Thoracic rotation contributes to creating a full turn without requiring excessive shoulder motion.
Downswing
Trunk rotation helps transfer force toward the upper body.
Follow-Through
Adequate mobility allows the body to continue rotating and dissipate energy after impact.
Hip Mobility
The hips are another major rotational component of the golf swing.
If hip rotation is restricted, the golfer may compensate above the pelvis.
That can influence the spine and shoulders even though the golfer's symptoms are felt far from the hip itself.
Your Shoulder Should Not Create Hip Motion
A shoulder can be structurally healthy and still become overloaded if it repeatedly compensates for a body that cannot rotate efficiently. Golf mobility training should therefore examine where the missing movement actually originates.
What Does The Rotator Cuff Do?
The rotator cuff is often described simply as a group of muscles that rotate the arm.
Its role is more important than that.
The cuff helps dynamically stabilize the humeral head within the socket while larger muscles move the arm.
Centers The Shoulder
Helps maintain controlled positioning of the humeral head during movement.
Creates Rotation
Contributes to internal and external rotation of the shoulder.
Controls Motion
Helps the shoulder remain stable while the arm accelerates and decelerates.
Rotator Cuff Strength For Golfers
Rotator cuff training should emphasize controlled strength and endurance rather than simply lifting the heaviest possible resistance.
The cuff needs to function repeatedly throughout a golf session while maintaining precision and control.
Exercises are commonly built around external rotation, internal rotation when appropriate, elevation control, and integrated shoulder stability.
Control Before Load
The goal of cuff strengthening is not to create the strongest possible isolated rotation exercise. It is to build a shoulder that remains controlled as the arm changes position, speed, and direction during real activity.
Scapular Strength
The scapula—or shoulder blade—is a major component of normal shoulder mechanics.
Muscles surrounding the scapula help position and control it throughout arm movement.
Without a stable and coordinated scapula, the rotator cuff and deltoid may have to work less efficiently.
Retraction Control
Helps position the shoulder blade during upper-extremity movement.
Upward Rotation
Allows coordinated movement as the arm elevates.
Dynamic Stability
Provides a controlled platform as swing speed increases.
Core Strength For Golf
The core should not simply be thought of as abdominal strength.
During the golf swing, the trunk must transfer force while resisting unwanted movement and allowing controlled rotation.
A stronger, better-controlled trunk can help reduce excessive reliance on the arms for swing speed.
Lower-Body Strength
Golf power should not originate primarily from the shoulders.
The lower body creates a foundation for force production and rotational movement.
Building leg and hip strength can improve physical reserve and help maintain movement quality over a full round.

Rotational Strength
Golf is a rotational sport, so later-stage strength training should eventually integrate rotation.
This does not mean every exercise needs to mimic a golf swing.
The athlete first needs foundational strength. Rotational exercises can then teach the hips, trunk, scapula, and shoulders to produce and control force together.
Power And Swing Speed
Strength and power are related but not identical.
Strength is the ability to produce force. Power involves producing that force quickly.
Golf performance eventually requires both.
Strength First. Speed Second.
A golfer should generally develop enough mobility, stability, and strength to tolerate the swing before aggressively pursuing greater swing speed. Speed training increases mechanical demand and should be layered onto an adequate physical foundation.
Should Golfers Lift Weights?
For most healthy golfers, resistance training can be an important part of long-term physical preparation.
Strength training helps preserve muscle mass, bone health, balance, physical capacity, and athletic function as people age.
For golfers, the program can include lower-body strength, pulling and pushing patterns, core work, shoulder stability, and eventually rotational power.
Golfers Are Athletes
Golf may be a lifetime sport, but that does not mean the body should be trained as though the activity is physically trivial. Strength and conditioning can support both golf performance and general health.
What About Heavy Weight Training?
The appropriate load depends on the golfer's age, experience, shoulder health, medical conditions, goals, and training history.
Heavy resistance is not automatically harmful to a healthy shoulder, but exercise selection and technique matter.
For a shoulder recovering from injury or surgery, loading should respect the underlying diagnosis and stage of healing.
Shoulder Training After Rotator Cuff Repair
After rotator cuff repair, strengthening cannot simply begin whenever the shoulder feels better.
The repaired tendon must biologically heal to bone before progressively greater load is appropriate.
Once healing permits, strengthening moves from low-load cuff and scapular work toward integrated strength and eventually golf-specific activity.
Strength After Anatomic Total Shoulder Replacement
Anatomic total shoulder replacement can restore comfortable function after advanced arthritis, but postoperative strength training should respect the reconstruction and repaired soft tissues.
As healing progresses, resistance training can help restore the rotator cuff, deltoid, scapular muscles, and entire kinetic chain.
Golf-specific strength is then reintroduced progressively.
Strength After Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement
Reverse total shoulder replacement changes shoulder mechanics.
The deltoid plays a particularly important role in arm elevation, while remaining rotator cuff function may contribute to rotation depending on the individual shoulder.
Strength training should therefore reflect the actual reverse reconstruction rather than assuming every shoulder replacement should follow the same program.
Strength After Labral Repair
After instability surgery, rehabilitation must restore more than gross strength.
The shoulder needs dynamic stability, proprioception, rotator cuff control, scapular function, and eventually confidence moving at speed.

Endurance: The Forgotten Part Of Shoulder Training
A golfer may have enough strength to make one excellent swing and still lack the endurance to maintain that function through eighteen holes.
Fatigue matters because it can alter mechanics.
As shoulder, trunk, and lower-body muscles tire, the golfer may compensate and place greater stress on individual regions.
Practice Endurance
Build the ability to tolerate repeated swings without progressive loss of control.
Course Endurance
Prepare for several hours of walking, swinging, carrying, and variable terrain.
Recovery Capacity
Be able to recover appropriately after a round or training session.
The Driving Range Is Training
Range balls should be considered physical workload.
A golfer may hit more full swings in forty minutes at the range than during several hours on the golf course.
This is particularly relevant during return from injury or surgery.
Count The Work
Strength training, speed training, lessons, range balls, rounds of golf, and other exercise all contribute to total workload. Recovery depends on how all of these stresses interact—not simply the number of rounds played.
A Golf Warm-Up Should Prepare The Whole Body
A few practice swings on the first tee are better than nothing, but they do not fully prepare the body for high-speed rotational movement.
A useful golf warm-up should gradually prepare the hips, trunk, shoulders, and nervous system before maximal swings begin.

Increase body temperature and begin moving before high-speed activity.

Prepare the lower body for loading and rotational movement.

Prepare the trunk for backswing and follow-through.

Rehabilitation and performance should exist on the same continuum: heal the tissue, restore movement, rebuild strength, develop capacity, and then return the patient to the activity they care about.

The goal is not a stronger shoulder in isolation. It is a stronger golfer.
