Shoulder care · Northeast Ohio
Recovery built around your goals.
A clear plan connects your operation, everyday health, rehabilitation, and the activities that matter to you. Start with the essentials, then ask what the evidence supports for any additional treatment.
Make the essentials practical
Food and support at home
Plan accessible meals with enough energy and protein. Tell the team about poor appetite, unintended weight loss, or dietary restrictions. A dietitian can help when needs are complicated; a supplement is not automatically necessary.
Smoking and medical preparation
Smoking increases surgical complications. Ask for cessation support before surgery and discuss medications with your clinicians. Bring an up-to-date medication and supplement list; do not change prescriptions based on a general website.
A written rehabilitation plan
Know your procedure, restrictions, exercises, follow-up date, and whom to contact with questions. Ask the team to explain what must happen before the next stage.
Your goals
List the tasks that matter most: sleep, dressing, work, golf, tennis, or lifting. Use these as discussion points at follow-up, not as deadlines that override healing precautions.
Be specific about “evidence-based”
A helpful treatment claim identifies the operation, patient group, outcome, and uncertainty. Less pain, stronger muscles, a healed tendon, and earlier return to sport are different outcomes.
PRP: results depend on the question
A 2024 randomized trial of PRP added during rotator cuff repair did not show superior functional or structural outcomes at 12 months. Findings for one preparation or surgical use should not be generalized to every PRP injection.
New recovery technologies
Before considering blood-flow restriction, laser therapy, hyperbaric oxygen, or another adjunct, ask for studies in patients having your operation, the relevant benefit, risks, cost, and alternatives. Listing a technology here does not mean it is offered or recommended.
Build your recovery discussion
- Which parts of my plan are essential?
- Which are optional, and what would they add?
- What evidence applies to someone like me?
- How will we judge progress and respond to a setback?
