For golfers, recovery requires more than waiting for discomfort to disappear. Can You Golf After Biceps Tenodesis?
Yes. Returning to golf is a realistic goal for most appropriately treated golfers after biceps tenodesis. The important distinction is whether the tenodesis was performed alone or as part of a larger operation. A golfer recovering from an isolated biceps tenodesis may follow a very different pathway from someone who also had a rotator cuff repair or another major shoulder reconstruction.
What Is The Long Head Of The Biceps Tendon?
The biceps muscle has two proximal tendon attachments. The long head of the biceps tendon travels through the shoulder joint and along the front of the shoulder before joining the biceps muscle farther down the arm.
Because of its location, the long head of the biceps can become a source of shoulder pain.
Biceps Tendinitis
Inflammation or degeneration of the tendon can produce pain at the front of the shoulder.
Biceps Tearing
Partial tearing or advanced degeneration can make the tendon persistently symptomatic.

The objective is to eliminate the symptomatic portion of the tendon from the shoulder while preserving the contour and useful function of the biceps muscle.
Treat The Pain Generator While Preserving Function
Biceps tenodesis is not simply cutting the tendon. The tendon is secured to the humerus so that the muscle can continue to contribute to elbow flexion and forearm supination while the painful intra-articular portion is removed from the shoulder.

For golf, restoring shoulder motion is only one component. The hips, thoracic spine, shoulder blade, and trunk must also contribute appropriately to the swing.

Direct biceps strengthening should be introduced progressively after adequate healing.
The objective is not simply to restore an isolated curl. The arm eventually needs to tolerate lifting, carrying, exercise, and the repetitive upper-extremity demands associated with golf.

A Progressive Return To Golf
Putting → chipping → pitching → partial short irons → full short irons → longer irons → woods → driver → range volume → nine holes → eighteen holes.
The exact progression depends on whether the tenodesis was isolated or accompanied by another shoulder procedure.
When Can I Putt After Biceps Tenodesis?
Putting is a low-demand golf activity because the swing is short and slow.
For an isolated tenodesis, it may become appropriate relatively early in the golf-specific progression once postoperative restrictions allow comfortable use of the arm.
If the tenodesis accompanied a rotator cuff repair, labral repair, shoulder replacement, or another procedure, those additional restrictions must also be considered.
When Can I Chip?
Chipping introduces greater shoulder movement, trunk rotation, and acceleration while still allowing excellent control over swing length and speed.

The objective is to expose the recovering arm to progressively greater golf-specific movement without creating a sudden increase in workload.
When Can I Hit Irons?
Partial swings with short irons provide a logical next step.
As the shoulder and biceps demonstrate adequate comfort and strength, swing length, speed, club length, and repetition can gradually increase.
Build The Swing Rather Than Testing The Repair
Early golf sessions should not be used to find out how hard the recovering shoulder can swing. They should progressively rebuild the movement and physical capacity required for normal golf.
When Can I Hit Driver?
Driver generally returns later because the longer club encourages a larger and faster swing.
The golfer should first tolerate shorter clubs, progressive full swings, and increasing practice volume without persistent pain or weakness.
Returning to driver should represent the next step in a successful progression rather than the first test of whether the shoulder is healed.
The Driving Range
The range can expose the recovering shoulder to more repetition than an actual round.
A golfer may hit dozens of balls with little rest, increasing cumulative load and fatigue.

One reason biceps tenodesis may be selected instead of tenotomy is to maintain a more normal relationship between the tendon and muscle.
No procedure can guarantee identical appearance or strength in every patient, but tenodesis is intended to preserve useful biceps function while treating the diseased tendon within the shoulder.

The goal is not simply to make the biceps stop hurting. It is to return the entire arm to useful, confident activity.
